About Hillcrest

Our Mission

At Hillcrest Elementary....

We strive for success by showing our ROAR!

Which means....

We work to foster a safe and positive learning environment by teaching students to show Respect, Ownership, Acceptance, and Responsibility. We believe in building a partnership of shared responsibility with the student, the family and the community in establishing high expectations for learning and behavior.

A school poster displays the word 'ROAR' with associated values: Respect, Ownership, Acceptance, and Responsibility.

History

Exterior view of Hillcrest Elementary

West Boise grew rapidly in the late 1950's, necessitating the construction of several new schools.  The new Hillcrest Country Club subdivision caused the populations of Whitney and McKinley Schools to increase dramatically.  In 1958, Hillcrest Elementary was built south of the subdivision. It initially opened with only six rooms. The area growth continued and seven more rooms were added in 1959.  The next year five additional rooms were added, bringing the total to eighteen.  As the case with other schools, the original flat roof leaked like a sieve by the late 80's, and a hipped roof was built in 1994 to keep students and teachers dry. Several new classrooms were added when the roof was replaced. In 2018, Boise Parks and Recreation awarded Hillcrest with a grant to build a new all-accessible playground. In 2020, construction was started on a much needed larger cafeteria separate from the rest of the building.

Hillcrest Harvest Party

In the fall Hillcrest has typically done a school wide Harvest Party. This event gives our families a chance to connect and have fun at our school. The donut game was a big hit this last year!

Students gather outside to work on old fashioned skills like lassoing and starting fires.

History in Action

Our older students get to celebrate Idaho History in an interactive way when Wagons Ho visited our school.

Hillcrest Hero

Once a quarter a couple of students are selected in each grade as Hillcrest Heroes for demonstrating exceptional ROAR in our school. These students receive a t-shirt and certificate as well as recognition in front of the whole school.

Students gather in the cafeteria to carve pumpkins.

Family Engagement

At Hillcrest we try to hold at least one family engagement event each semester for each grade level. Fifth graders did pumpkin math this year, a messy but fun learning opportunity!
